As part of its mandate as the management office of the Energy City Association, ENCO AG managed the 2000-Watt-Areas certification body. Between 2012 and 2024, specific sites that meet the requirements for sustainable construction, operation and mobility were awarded this label.
The label consisted of a quantified section, which was based on the SIA Efficiency Path 2040, and a qualitative section based on the criteria derived from the Energy City Catalog of Measures. The certificate was awarded in three versions, as a “2000-watt site under development”, “in operation” and “in transformation”. A key factor in the 2000-Watt certification was the recognition of settlement areas that were able to demonstrate sustainable use of resources and emissions reductions and thus make an important contribution to national and municipal energy and climate targets.
The Energy City Association played an extensive role in the development of the label and won the WTO tender as the 2019-2023 certification body in 2018. ENCO AG was responsible for the quality assurance of the certification process, managed the 2000-Watt-Area auditors and supported the 2000-Watt-Area Label Commission in the technical examination of the dossiers. The certification body was a member of the project’s operational steering group and the technical committee, where it played a key role in the strategic and content-related further development of the system and supported the technical management.
In particular, our extensive experience with the development and refinement of a catalog of criteria was of great value here. We were therefore strongly involved in the development of the “2000-watt sites in operation” and “2000-watt sites in transformation” versions. At the end of 2023, 50 sites were certified in one of the three forms of development, operation or transformation.
